Malaria remains one of the most life-threatening diseases of humans. Five species of the genus Plasmodium are known to cause human malaria infections. The majority of cases are caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which can lead to high morbidity and mortality if not treated promptly. Non-falciparum malaria is caused by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale subspecies, Plasmodium malariae or Plasmodium knowlesi.

Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) has been adopted by the World Health Organization as a first-line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Advantages of A.C.T.

  • it has proven more effective in treating the disease, and even in reducing its transmission.
  • Artemisinin treatment leads to a reduction in average hospital stays, more rapid parasite clearance in comparison with any other anti-malarial and in complicated malaria, a lowering of the global mortality rate.
  • High cure rate ( >95% ) and low relapse
  • Good tolerability profile
